W4O-Hellas is a network of women professionals practicing oncology in Greece. The aim of W4O-Hellas is to promote interaction, enhance ideas among women oncologists in Greece and across Europe and create a support network for women oncologists. At the same time, this forum aims to provide advice, awareness and support from women oncologists to women cancer patients and their families in Greece.
Formed in May 2014, W4O-Hellas is coordinated by a committee of six women medical oncologists: Sofia Agelaki, Athena Christopoulou, Eleni Galani, Helena Linardou, Amanda Psyrri and Zenia Saridaki.
In October 2014, the first W4O-Hellas forum took place and has been followed by several other successful events, and Forums.
The W4O-Hellas has established two Programs for women in Greece with low income or with no state health insurance:
HPV co-tests for cervical cancer prevention and early diagnosis are offered free, funded by W4O-Hellas through an ongoing donation of Roche Diagnostics.
BRCA1/2 tests and genetic counselling for low income Greek women that fulfil the criteria for testing. This Program is funded by the financial gains of the main and other fundraising events and private donations.
W4O-Hellas was one of the 20 organizations from 18 countries selected by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and Pfizer to receive grants from the “Seeding Progress and Resources for the Cancer Community: Metastatic Breast Cancer Challenge (SPARC MBC Challenge)”, a first-of-its-kind initiative to address the unique challenges facing women with metastatic breast cancer worldwide.
Women 4 Oncology (W4O-Hellas) and KEFI (Association of Cancer Patients-Volunteers-Friends-Doctors) formed W4life, a Forum for Women with Metastatic Breast Cancer in Greece. W4life is a physical structure in the form of a coordinating pillar as well as an innovative web-based platform for Women with MBC patient. The goal of the pproject is to inform, offer advocacy, support and communication, with doctors and hospitals and other patients, to all metastatic breast cancer patients, their families and their caregivers al over Greece. Also, to educate them on the differences and uniqueness of an MBC diagnosis and ‘map’ the situation across Greece regarding metastatic breast cancer needs in order to help in developing national targeted programs for MBC patients.
W4Life received two awards from the “Boussias-Health Care Business Awards-2017”. Gold Award, in the e-Health category – Digital applications for information and integrated patient care and silver award for actions aimed at information, awareness and prevention.
